Essay Contest Tasks Students with Examining American History

Lindenhurst, NEW YORK (January 2024)—Four Lindenhurst Middle School students earned top places in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen contest, a youth essay competition. Nicholas Reub won first place, while Amina Baijnauth, Kameryn Hubschimtt, and Abigail Gianninoto tied for third place in the Town of Babylon.

The contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, and draft a 300- to 400- word essay expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW commander-in-chief. The theme for this year was: "What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?"

The students compete for a share of nearly $1 million in state and national prizes with the first place state winners receiving a $500 prize and the national first place winner earning a $5,000 prize.
