Explanation of the change in your Property Tax Bill - due to a change in how you receive the School Tax Relief (STAR)
New York State instructed the Receiver of Taxes to eliminate the STAR exemption credit, historically seen as a reduction on your school tax bill. In place of the STAR exemption credit, homeowners will receive a check in the mail. This process is being phased in depending on income level. Eventually everyone will receive a check instead seeing this exemption credit on their bill. Important to note that your property tax bill did not increase, the check is net against your bill. School Districts set the tax rate, and the town sets the assessed value.
