New York State Regents major life event exemption information
An important update from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) was recently released that pertains to graduation requirements. As you may know, NYSED, through the Blue Ribbon Commission, has been in the process of reviewing graduation requirements and has made recommendations to the Board of Regents. Once that information has been formalized, we will share the details with you. One component of this work that has been approved for the 2024-2025 school year is the addition of a Major Life Event Exemption.
The Department recognizes that unexpected challenges, such as serious illness, the loss of a parent or parental relationship, or other profound personal situations, can have an impact on a student’s ability to meet the diploma assessment requirements. The Major Life Event Exemption allows students who have experienced major life events to be considered for relief from certain diploma-related assessments, specifically New York State requirements, such as Regents Exams. Assessment exemptions for major life events apply exclusively to those assessments used to meet NYS assessment requirements for graduation (e.g., Regents, FLACS, etc.). It is important to note that this does not apply to AP Exams, which are administered by the College Board. No exemptions can be granted for these higher education exams. Students who receive an exemption will still need to fulfill all other graduation requirements, including coursework and required labs, in order to earn a high school diploma.
In order to qualify for an exemption for a major life event*, the following eligibility criteria must be met:
