AP Physics Students Attend Cosmic Pathways symposium in NYC

Recently, the LHS AP Physics students attended the “Cosmic Pathways” Physics symposium in NYC. According to the Cosmic Pathways website, The symposium is an event focused on helping students learn about how physics can get you into college, graduate school, and launch your career.
Ten of our top students, Ayman Alami, Zoraiz Jamiel, Aiden Nunez, Daniel (Seb) Parades, Angelina Parente, Ajay Rambarra, Kerem Satar, Armina Yetimoglu, Tuana Yetimoglu, and Crystal Wu, came on our trip to City College of New York where they signed up for a wide range of workshops related to Physics, Research, and Careers in STEM as well as met representatives from various colleges and physics societies. The conference had students from High School to Graduate Students working together and sharing their research. Our own Armina Yetimoglu shared her award winning presentation on Aerodynamics and received glowing responses from the audience and staff alike.
The students participated in such topics as:
- Symphonies in Space: 'Listening' to the Universe with Gravitational Waves
- Exploring Wind Turbine and Solar Panel for a Better Environment
- Pulsed Power Inertial Fusion
- Flight Dynamics: Exploring the Impact of Wing Design on Fighter Jet Speed -From Skies to the Tracks, presented by our own Armina Yetimoglu, Lindenhurst High School student
Mr. Smith, LHS science teacher who set up this trip, added, “On the train ride home I checked with the kids and asked if this is something worth bringing students next year, and I got a resounding Yes!!!! Some students said this was the best field trip they have ever been on.”
All in all it was a long day; meeting at the LIRR station at 7 am and the last kid getting picked up at 7:45 pm, and it being the first day of Ramadan some of the students were on their first day of fasting until we got on the train home, but to see how much fun the kids had, and the connections they made, and the questions they left with, it was an amazing experience.
Congratulations to our amazing AP Physics students on a great day of learning – and on a weekend!
