Lindenhurst Remembers 9/11
Lindenhurst Remembers.
Yesterday, students across the Lindenhurst District observed the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with meaningful tributes. In many schools, both students and staff donned red, white, and blue to express their patriotism.
At the High School, Principal Dr. Boccanfuso delivered a moving statement about the profound impact of that day, followed by a moment of silence.
In Ms. Miller's 3rd grade class, students engaged with a sensitive, age-appropriate video that explained the events of 9/11. They discussed acts of heroism and created projects honoring their personal heroes. One of these projects was selected to be displayed at New York City's 9/11 Memorial, where it was photographed in the hands of American heroes: an FDNY firefighter and a United States Marine.
Mrs. Steiger’s and Mrs. Birnbaum's classes participated in a program offered by the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The program featured a film highlighting first-person accounts of the attacks and their aftermath to help viewers learn about 9/11 and the importance of commemoration. Afterward, education staff was available via live chat to answer students’ questions on September 11.
The Lindenhurst High School junior varsity football team, led by coaches Mike Cheskay, Kevin Cullen, Joseph Snyder, and volunteer assistant coach Rob Commisso, paid tribute to the FDNY and all first responders by running 22 100-yard sprints in honor of the 2,200 steps that the heroes ran up in the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, to save lives. “We thought it was important to teach these young men a valuable lesson about bravery and sacrifice on this historic day.
