Lindenhurst, NEW YORK (April 2024)—Members of the Lindenhurst High School Italian Club recently visited West Gates Elementary School to give a special presentation to fifth graders. The visiting high schoolers were seniors who had received a special opportunity through the club to visit Italy in 2023.

Members of the Italian Club—Julia Sessa, Haley Bosak, Hannah Penofsky, Miranda Romero, and Donatella Cerini—discussed different aspects of the Italian language and culture. They spoke about the importance and benefits of learning a new language, which included earning college credit; learning more deeply about different cultures; and in their case, the opportunity to visit another country.

The visiting seniors also gave an introductory Italian lesson. They went over how to say certain colors and numbers, as well as greetings, in Italian. The students then broke up into smaller groups to practice what they had just learned.

"This was a great educational experience for our fifth graders, who had a rare opportunity to hear about the benefits of learning another language from those who have experienced them first hand,” said Principal Donna Smawley.
